Sony Movie Studio Platinum: Can't Get Past Activation Window

After a month using the free trial of Movie Studio Platinum 13, I decided to go ahead and buy it outright from 'MAGIX' who apparently are the sole official online/download distributors.

So I start the program, and it asks for my serial number, which is fine, as one was supplied in an e-mail by Magix. So I enter the serial number and submit, a window pops up stating that the program needs to restart in order to 'complete the upgrade process'.

Then the first window appears asking me to input the serial number again. It then continues in the cycle indefinitely.

I have run the program in safemode (with networking), in numerous compatability modes, with antimalware disabled, and as both admin and non-admin to no avail.

PC Specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit (I did download the 64bit version of the program, and the trial worked before on the same system)

8-core Intel i7 6900K @ 3.2GHz

2x nvidia GTX 1080 in SLI

32GB RAM

EDIT: The serial number IS valid, if I change one character in it, it gives me a different message stating the code is invalid, and doesn't restart the program.

SOLUTION: Delete the License folder from your machines Registry:

'In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following directory:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Wow6432Node > Sony Creative Software > [Program Name] > [Version Number] > License

Right-click the License folder ONLY and select Delete. If prompted, confirm you wish to delete the folder.'

The faulty module “amd64_microsoft.vc90. MSVCR90.dll” is related to Microsoft Visual Studio that crashes when you launch the program “Sony Movie Studio 13”.

Is the issue specific to Sony Movie Studio 13?

As per the latest updates at Sony website is concerned, this software is compatible with Windows 8.1. Refer to the link to get the details on it:

I would suggest you to repair Microsoft Visual Studio and check if it fixes the issue. Also take a note of the version of Microsoft Visual Studio while repairing it. Follow the methods suggested below:

Method 1:

Follow the steps provided below to repair the version of Visual Studio installed on the computer:

  • Press Windows+X keys and select Programs and Features.
  • Locate Microsoft Visual Studio from the list of programs installed and right click on it. Select Change.
  • Click on Repair. Follow the onscreen instructions to repair the current version of the application.

Restart the computer and then try launching Sony Movie Studio 13 again. If the error message still occurs, proceed to the next method.

Method 2:

Uninstall the current version of the movie studio 13 and then reinstall it in Windows compatibility mode. See if it makes any difference. Follow the steps listed below:

  • Locate Sony Movie Studio and right click on it. Select Uninstall. Follow the onscreen instructions to do so.
  • Locate the folder that has the setup file for the application.
  • Right Click on the setup file for the driver which you have downloaded. Click on Properties.
  • Go to Compatibility tab and check the box which states “Run this program in compatibility mode for”.
  • Select the version of Windows 8 from the drop down list. Click on Apply and then on OK.
  • Double Click on the .exe setup file for the application and follow the onscreen instructions to install Movie Studio. If this doesn’t help, you can choose a different version of Windows for compatibility mode and then verify the results.

Note: While installing the application, make sure that you install other application related to it and when asked to do. Sometimes, not installing the additional applications provided with setup could result in such scenarios.
